Structural and Construction Engineering are key branches of civil engineering dealing with the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings, bridges, dams, stadia, water and oil tanks, retaining structures, and port and harbor facilities. The department offers courses in structural analysis and design, construction materials, and construction procedures and methods. At undergraduate level, the courses offered are part of the civil engineering program with awards in Diploma in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, all with specialization in Structural and Construction Engineering. Besides classroom lectures, students are exposed to laboratory work and industrial attachment to give them a hands-on capability upon graduation. Part of the training is carried out in collaboration with the Material Testing and Research Department of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. In addition, recent arrangements with the Government will allocate some infrastructure projects to the university which will be used to train students in real time work conditions. In the final year of study, students carry out a project assignment under supervision to introduce them to research methodologies enabling them to explore knowledge beyond what they were taught during formal contact. Curricula are also being developed to offer courses at masters and doctoral levels.
