Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment(FEBE)
The department of Geotechnical and Mining Engineering offers courses in soil investigation and foundation engineering, tunneling, mining and mineral engineering, oil and gas exploration and exploitation. Successful students will get the respective awards in civil engineering with specialization in Geotechnical engineering or Resource Engineering. Geotechnical Engineering covers engineering geology, earthquake engineering, engineering soil mechanics, foundation engineering, slope stabilization, and tunneling. On the other hand, Mining engineering deals with the exploration, exploitation, and processing of natural resources which include quarry stones, minerals, oil, gas, and water. The programs will be designed to enable our graduates to take leading roles in the management of minerals and mining companies as well as the energy and water security sectors. These courses will be carried out in close collaboration with the other engineering disciplines in the school so that graduates can provide a supportive role to these disciplines. The students will be trained in the planning and execution of research and development work. The research initiatives and teaching will instill the culture of understanding and managing the earth’s natural processes, resources, and environment. Courses will be conducted through classroom lectures and tutorials, laboratory work and industrial attachments, and students will be expected to carry out a supervised research project in the final year of study
